Since her father, Mark Alba, was in the United States Air Force the family moved several times, living in states Mississippi, California and Texas. Cathy, Jessica's mother, is a mix of French and Danish background while Jessica's father is Spanish and Mexican American. Jessica's brother, Joshua, arrived just one year after Jessica on July 8, 1982.

Talented and already realizing that acting was a passion, young Jessica was signed by an agent at age 13 and acted in several small parts before making her film debut as Gail in the family comedy Camp Nowhere (1994).
