How to Do Updos With Medium Length Hair

Creating a sexy updo is an essential beauty trick to keep up your sleeve because wearing your hair up is so versatile. You can rock a messy updo for a casual meeting with friends, or a sleek style for the office or special events. Medium hair is a dream to work with, since you've got enough length to create the bulk of the style, but not so much that your hair drops like lead. Break out your beauty tools and create a luscious updo for any occasion!
1.

Nix the urge to wash and dry your hair before you create your updo. Freshly washed hair is a little too slippery to hold up a style well, so skip the morning wash and blow out in favor of a few extra minutes of shuteye.

2.

Curl the bottom half of your hair using a curling iron, if you've got straight hair. Skip this step if your hair naturally has texture. Adding some curls or texture provides more oomph when you put your hair up, so your cute updo doesn't fall flat too quickly. Don't worry about making the curls look perfect -- you just want to add a little volume before you sweep your locks up.

3.

Gather up your hair into a ponytail, using your hands, and secure it with a hairband. Position the ponytail where you want your final style. It can be high on your head, low or right in the middle. If you're going for a super-sleek look, use a brush to smooth the hair before you secure it so you will get a smooth surface. If the updo you have in mind is a ponytail, then you've already accomplished your goal! Finish with a mist of hairspray.

4.

Twist the length of your ponytail and wrap it around the bottom of the pony, at the hairband, to create a bun. Hold that bun tight with one hand while you use the other to insert hairpins to hold it secure. To add interest, try braiding your pony first before creating the bun and securing it in place.

5.

Keep that updo in place by liberally applying hair spray. Don't go overboard and shellac your hair; you want your updo to look soft and sexy without looking overdone. Take time to test the hairpins to make sure they stay put, and add additional pins to secure any hair that has started to slip. Get out there and enjoy your new updo without worrying about it falling down!
